Paul Childerley is organising a ‘deer move’ cull on his Bedfordshire estate to bring down the number of Chinese water deer and reduce damage to farm crops over the winter months. Elsewhere on the estate, this military spec thermal drone is helping to answer the tricky question of how many deer live in the UK. Estimates vary wildly – deer are difficult to spot, may be nocturnal and often move around a lot. We follow wildlife consultant Ben Harrower as he flies his high tech thermal drone over the ground, spotting deer in the undergrowth, then zooming in for a close-up look to determine species, sex and even age.
