Foxes

Robert Bucknell’s foxshooting diary

When it comes to fox control Robert Bucknell wrote the book – literally. In this series he runs through the foxshooter’s year, month by month, explaining fox natural history and behaviour at each stage of the year, and how you can use this knowledge to give you an edge controlling foxes to protect vulnerable livestock, game and wildlife.
April

April is regarded as the start of the foxshooting year, when vixens are mostly below ground feeding young cubs. Over the coming weeks, the vixen and her litter will need a huge amount of food – just when ground-nesting birds and other wildlife are at their most vulnerable. In areas where foxes need to be controlled, this is an important time to deal with these litters.

May
May is the peak breeding season for ground nesting birds, just when the vixen is hunting hard to feed her litter of growing cubs. Robert explains that taking out the adults and cubs now will make a huge difference to survival rates of all kinds of vulnerable wildlife. Remember that from May onwards thermal becomes more important, as growing crops and grass provide more cover for foxes to move about unseen.
