Baku World Cup cancelled

The planned ISSF World Cup in Baku has been cancelled due to the covid situation in Azerbaijan. The news is a blow to Team GB’s shooting Olympians, Kirsty Hegarty, Aaron Heading (pictured above), Matt Coward-Holley and Amber Hill, who were all due to compete at the event from 21 June to 2 July as part of the Team GB squad. It would have been the last senior international competition before the Tokyo Olympic Games.

The ISSF explain that Azerbaijan authorities “considered it inappropriate and unsafe” to hold the World Cup. Latest statistics for Azerbaijan show 313,812 infections and 4,402 deaths [source].

The World Cup in Italy from 7 to 17 May is still going ahead, and so too is the European Championship in Croatia from 20 May to 6 June – at which there are still Olympic quota places to be won.
