Abbey Ling takes gold in Portugal

The Ling family performed well at the Algarve Grand Prix, held at the O Pinhal clay ground in Portugal on 2-3 March 2019.

In the first major trapshooting event of the season, Abbey Ling scraped into the women’s final after achieving sixth place. This was just a warm-up. She shot the final with a 45 ex 50 single barrel to take gold. Great Britain and Northern Ireland’s Kirsty Hegarty took silver and Ana Rodrigues of Portugal bronze.

In the men’s event, Abbey’s husband Ed Ling took fifth place after shooting 120 ex 125. João Azevedo from Portugal took gold. Both Matthew Coward-Holley and double trap great Peter Wilson, now shooting trap, were near the top of the rankings.

Ed Ling’s father Steve came fourth in the veterans, behind Poland’s Leszek Koprowicz in first, GB’s Ian Peel in second and GB’s Paul Culverwell in third.

In other events, Michael Bovingdon produced a stunning performance to win the junior final, while Lucy Hall took gold in the women’s junior final.
