If you need a good solid pair of binoculars but don’t want to spend a fortune on one of the top brands, Bushnell is definitely worth a look. Take their Engage binoculars for instance. Most popular is the 10×42 X model, which delivers quality glass in a lightweight package, selling for just £170.
Here though we’re looking at the Engage DX 12×50, which retails for £313. Ben Mcilwain, from distributors Edgar Brothers, reckons there’s a lot to be said for the extra magnification. “You can get in really close to whatever you’re looking at,” he says.

“OK they’re a couple of ounces heavier than the 10x42s, but they’re really well balanced. If you’re looking at deer, with 12x mag you can see a lot of extra detail. The other week I was watching roebucks and identifying them by little details on their antlers.”
He says the Engage binos are really robust too. “They have an IPX7 waterproof rating, so they can actually be submerged in water for 30 minutes. Waterproofing is important when you’re using them in the field; you don’t want them fogging up.”

The Engage DX 12×50 has an all-metal chassis, fully multicoated optics, and Bushnell’s exclusive EXO Barrier lens coating that repels water, oil and dust. They are covered with textured rubber armour which provides protection in the field as well as a firm grip.
