Paul Childerley is in Poland, helping with a government cull of red deer in and around the town of Piwniczna-Zdrój near the Slovakian border. The deer are huge Carpathian reds, with some of the hinds achieving over 100kg. The animals are coming into the villagers’ gardens in search of safety and food, so the local people are very supportive of the hunt – there’s no problem walking around dressed in a hazmat suit and carrying a rifle. Our outfitter Eryk Książkiewicz tells us he needs 80 deer shot to reach the government target. Thanks to our local guide Poitr, Paul gets eight across two days.
