The China Hunting Show is underway at the National Convention & Exhibition Centre in Shanghai. The first hunting show in China, 55 exhibitors from all over the world have taken more than 80 stands.
Most of the standholders are safari companies, with most of those from southern Africa. It is a retail show and standholders agree they had no idea what to expect from visitors. Chinese are increasingly interested in hunting in Africa – but hunting and guns are restricted in China itself.
Standholders report sophisticated interest in management hunts for plainsgame. They have had enquiries from Chinese visitors about trophy export. And a number of standholders report that enterprising Shanghai travel agents are also visiting them, offering their services.
Trade exhibitors include Beretta guns, Shooterking clothing, retailer Decathlon’s hunting brand Solognac, and Bowman clay pigeon traps. Guns are strictly licenced in China. However, the Chinese government is becoming increasingly enthusiastic about shooting sports, thanks in part to China’s success in shooting events at the Olympics. The Chinese state is promoting shooting as a key sport at the forthcoming Chinese youth games.
